Are you a commercial operator?

A commercial operator is someone who receives payment to take customers along the Stock Route. In the event of a tag-along tour, the commercial permit covers the lead vehicle only. All other vehicles in the tour require a (non-commercial) permit.

A permit is required for each vehicle travelling the Stock Route. Only one name needs to be entered as the applicant, preferably either the owner (if on the trip) or the main driver of the vehicle.

2. Vehicle

Vehicle type

If you choose 'Other' then your application will require manual assessment. This is because the automatic approval only applies to the common modes of transport. Appropriately equipped 4WD light vehicles (e.g. Toyota Landcruiser, Nissan Patrol, Landrover Defender) and motorcycles are the recommended modes of transport, however heavier 4WD vehicles (e.g. Oka, Mitsubishi Canter) are currently also allowed. If you are planning to travel by other means, please include additional information when submitting your application.

Will you be towing a trailer?

The towing of trailers along the CSR is discouraged due to the damage they create on the track, such as large corrugations and ruts. This can lead to additional damage to the environment through parallel tracks being created. It also contributes to increasing the footprint of camp sites. If you have no choice but to tow a trailer, there will be an additional fee that goes towards managing the stock route environment.

A maximum trip duration limit applies for automatic approval. While travellers on the CSR tend to do so at different rates, experience shows that 6 weeks allows for plenty of time for even the most leisurely sightseer. If you do need to remain on the CSR for longer, please include additional information when submitting your application.

This information is for planning purposes only and will not form part of your permit conditions. For instance, estimated vehicle and people numbers will be made available to stores along the CSR (Kunawarritji and Billiluna) to assist them in planning their supplies. Information will also be made available to ranger groups along the CSR to assist them in planning monitoring and management works.
